Welcome to my griotwRites Blog! Ours is a culture that lauds individuality as related to material acquisition, but not for the merits of just being. Our self-worth is defined by what we do and not by who we are as human beings. As such, it is increasingly easy to see one another as the Other and to be insensitive to our commonality and communal needs.
Each of us is unique and important. I fervently believe every person should write an autobiography whether it is publicly shared or not. The process itself holds immeasurable opportunities for personal discovery and growth. So, I urge you to write your life story and, perhaps, to even share them with others. In this way, we can benefit from one another’s experiences and not live in the emotional islands that keep us separate from our communal humanity.
In this Blog I will share my lived experience of the past seven decades. My interests span the topics of creative writing (poetry, essays, novels, science fiction, plays), music of all cultures, sound and vibration as tools for inspiration and healing, and spiritual practices for personal cultivation.
Many years ago, a colleague and friend who knew I aspired to be a writer gifted me with a beautiful book containing blank pages. The gift card read, “If you want to be a writer, write!” Here I am, forty plus years later, still writing. It is hoped the posts you read interest and inspire you. I look forward to your comments.
Love this: “we can benefit from one another’s experiences and not live in the emotional islands that keep us separate from our communal humanity.” A convincing statement. I will be gathering with a few women friends this summer to celebrate our 40th turn around the sun. I think this writing and sharing process of self would be a great project for our time together. Thank you for the inspiration and encouragement. ~n.i.
